The Beer Belly

With a name like The Beer Belly, you wouldn't expect this type of joint to serve such addictive food but it does! J and I would probably come here on a daily basis if we still lived around the corner.
The atmosphere is a perfect mix for the both of us; not too pretentious or hipster yet comfortable and approachable.

The Beer Belly has been curating an evolving list of excellent craft beers and a menu that is fun and thoughtfully prepared with simple and delicious ingredients. By now, you might as well call us regulars. We've tried nearly everything on the menu and while not all bites are perfect, there's been some memorable ones that are worth coming back for:

$1 Oysters: It's become a Sunday ritual for us pairing these freshly shucked beauties with a pick-your-own flight of delectable beers. You can also stop by on weekdays from 11am to 5pm for this daily deal.

Bresaola Bites: These artfully wrapped purses of thinly sliced cured meats are generously filled with a creamy chive goat cheese. It's a symphony of flavors between the tanginess of the cheese and salty bites of the air-dried beef. The basil pesto adds another dimension of flavor, bringing a fragrant accent that pairs wonderfully.

Albany's Best Reuben: It's a pretty bold  statement to call itself "Albany's Best Reuben" but in J's book, The Beer Belly's reuben ranks pretty high. It's not house-made corned beef but it's a well-assembled sandwich made with quality ingredients: State National corned beef, barrel-aged sauerkraut, Oscar's smoked swiss, and creamy Russian dressing on toasted marbled rye. The potato chips have since evolved into less of a pedestrian presentation and while we wish the kale slaw was still a regular addition, the peanut noodle that usually accompanies the sandwiches is just as tasty.

Stoutly French Dip: Another revolving staple on our list is this slow-roasted prime rib sandwich topped with melted fontina, horseradish sauce, and the most delectable au jus made with stout. It's the kind of beef gravy you want to gulp down by the bowlful; so flavorful with just the right amount of roasted notes from the beer.

Lobster Roll: We're hoping this one-time Sunday special makes a regular appearance because it's the best one we've had outside of Maine. It was the perfect ratio of sweet, juicy lobster meat to well-seasoned citrusy mayo with scallions on a buttered roll.

Come for the drinks and stay for the food; you'll leave with more than a happy beer belly.
